OG principles

The principles behind every lesson.

The Orton-Gillingham Academy outlines the core principles of OG instruction. Every lesson Lori designs draws on them — adapted to one child at a time.

01

Diagnostic and Prescriptive

Instruction is continuous and responsive, with the teacher monitoring student performance and adjusting lessons to address needs, build on progress, and promote accuracy and automaticity.

02

Individualized

Lessons are tailored to each learner's unique profile, including their needs, background, and interests.

03

Language-Based and Alphabetic/Phonetic

Instruction is grounded in the structure and history of the English language, integrating reading, writing, spelling, and oral language, beginning with phonemes (sounds) and letter relationships and progressing to more complex patterns.

04

Simultaneous Multisensory

Learning simultaneously engages visual, auditory, and kinesthetic modalities to strengthen neural pathways.

05

Direct and Explicit

Concepts are clearly taught, modeled, and practiced, moving from guided to independent application.

06

Structured, Sequential, Cumulative, but Flexible

Instruction follows a systematic, logical progression from simple to complex, with ongoing review, while remaining flexible based on student needs.

07

Synthetic and Analytic

Students learn to blend parts into wholes (reading) and break wholes into parts (spelling), using both processes together.

08

Cognitive

Learners actively think about what they are learning and how to apply it, rather than relying on memorization.

09

Emotionally Sound

Instruction fosters confidence through consistent success and a supportive learning environment.

Tell me a little about your child and I'll be in touch. No pressure — just a conversation about where to begin.
